A sincere "Thank-You" to everyone who supported this Regional!

We like to thank our Judges once again for their patience and expert Judging.

Days Events & Photos

Special "thank-you" to all our members who came out to support the Pyrs and help in pulling it all together.   The day started off wet but was full of sun by the time the Pyrs got in the ring.   It was cool and windy, just great for the dogs, but not a good hair day for the rest of us!    Ribbons were flying off the table, the tents were flapping and still a good time was had by all.

After a much needed Lunch, our Tailgate got off to a frenzy start.   We had a very special Group with us from a much respected organization.   The kids (30 of them) from the 4H Group and their parents,  joined us for our Traditional Tailgate lunch.

After the Tailgate, Dr. Valerie Seeley (another huge thank-you) kindly agreed to do a "run-thru" Fun Match with the kids from 4H.   Our members were equally as kind to lend their dogs to the kids.   They had previously expressed an interest in Dog Shows and Great Pyrenees, and Phil Meagher and Donna Mercado, put this together and did an outstanding job of it!

This served as our Educational component for the Day.   Donna, Betsy Gartland, Cindy Miccio and several other folks helped the kids move along the ring with their dogs.

There were many dogs and standing ringside, I don't think I have ever been prouder of our wonderful Breed.   Many of these dogs were not raised with children but loved every minute of it!    Even our Rescue dogs joined in.   We thank all of you and your dogs!

But, there truley was one who stood out, one who was in there every rotation, she was the Star of the show!    Her name is "Mona" - Rivergrove's Portrait of Pyrview, our Best In Veteran Sweeps girl.   She showed EVERYONE she still has it and then some.   Her smiling face said it all - she never slowed or faltered and let the youngins know, she is not ready to retire just yet!    Pretty much she said to the other Pyrs "Move over and let me show you how it's done".

Mona and one of her Handlers and a Group!

We also had a DNA Clinic to participate in the CHIC DNA Repository Program - we collected 11 Samples and we thank all those who participated for such a great cause!

Thanks to East Penn Rescue for holding a Table and assisting with Educating the public - it is very much appreciated and you all should be proud of your dogs that showed in the 4H Fun Match!

The day finished and many of us went back to the Hotel to get prepared for our "Mixer" which is another one of our Traditions.   Folks started coming in around 6 pm and the Margaritas started to flow and didn't stop flowing till 11:30pm!   Lots of good food and conversation was had by all.

Catching up with friends and making some new ones is a great way to wind down the day.    We had friends in from Canada and to quote them;

"Wanted to touch base with you and say a VERY big thank you to you and the Penn Dutch club. You and the members are very warm and fun loving and made Chrissy and myself more than welcome to be in all of your company. Thank you to all and hope we get to meet up again."   Susan Tochor

Just one more reason that we keep doing this!

I personally want to thank some very special people who really did turn themselves inside out to help make this a day to remember.

Barb Bowes, Dick & Charlotte Powell, Chic & Bea Gottesman, Doreen Choffel, Annette Manwiller, Phil Meagher, Donna Mercado, John Mercado (the very best assistant), and Betsy Gartland!   THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!   The phone calls are still coming in on what a great time everyone had!

I could go on about the 4 H Group but Donna has done a great job of reporting already!

Hosted by

PENN-DUTCH Great Pyrenees Club

in conjunction with the

Lehigh Valley KC Show

If you skipped this event we are sorry to report that you missed one of the most spontaneous and comprehensively fun days you are ever likely to exPYRience.

To coincide with the AKC’s responsible pet ownership day, Penn Dutch invited several groups of 4H kids to visit with them at their September specialty.  The response was overwhelming and numbers had to be eventually capped at thirty kids from four different groups.  The purpose of the exercise was to introduce them to the world of show dogs and provide information about the Great Pyrenees.

To this end, a week before the show they gathered and were given a talk about the structure and purpose of a dog show.  This covered in broad outline everything from the class structures to the relevance of stacking to the judging of the breed standard.  They also got to meet the breed and learn a little of its history.

On the day of the show Dianne Migas the Penn Dutch Specialty Show Chair greeted a busload of eager, interested 4H kids and directed them to a brief grooming demonstration.  They then took their places to watch the judging.  Barb Bowes of Penn Dutch and Joanne Krausman of Garden State provided a presidential running commentary of the judging to help the kids and some adults understand.

After the obligatory face stuffing lunch the real fun started.  It was time for the 4H kids to run off the cake and demonstrate what they had learned.  Dogs were borrowed from the exhibitors and a fun match was held.  Dr. Valerie Seeley was prevailed upon to extend her judging duties from sweeps to cover the event.   Three rounds of close competition forced Valerie to reluctantly and with considerable difficulty identify six individual winners.

In addition to thanking Dr. Seeley, the organizers would like to take this opportunity to thank all the owners who lent their dogs and helped make this possible.  In particular the pet owners who attended the event and Mona the veteran sweepstakes star who stayed well past her bedtime to play with the kids.

Out of the mouth of babes … A selection of quotes from emails received from the kids following the event.

…….I am glad the judge didn’t go easy on us just cause we are kids …

Thanks, Thank You, Thanks, Thank You, Thanks, Thank You, Thanks, Thank You, Thanks, Thank You, Thanks, Thank You, Thanks, Thank You, ……………….(it goes on like that for a page and a half)
